Purpose Of Afforestation Projects

Awareness education:

Educating common public about importance of forests and dangers of deforestation is one of the major step towards restoration and reservation of forest areas, This project helps the local people to understand the consequences of haphazard cutting of trees by over grazing of domestic animals in new growing trees areas, improper collection of fodder, fire wood and even timber. Besides these, there is also need for the people to realize the destruction that can follow by the careless use of fire I the vicinity of forest areas since more than 30% of fire in forest are caused by men. Moreover, a forest once burnt and destroyed may take more than 50 years to be replaced, keeping these issues in view, the project is promoting plantation to get optimum benefits from nature and giving back the same to her.

For Mother Nature

In Nepal, the soil erosion rate has been 20-50 tons per hectare per year with the rate going up to 200 tons in critical areas. This massive erosion of fertile soil has greatly reduced the productivity of land chief in the terai region, which is the least forested and thus bears large areas of bare lands. The loosening of soil due to deforestation in these regions has invited wide inundation, which causes inestimable damage to human property and lives, yearly. According to government (HMG) data a loss of about 30% of revenue in plains has been estimated due to heavy floods.

And our project has focused on intensive and extensive plantation in area of these regions with active participation of the local community. Since it is a wise to plant 10 trees which survive to maturity rather than 20 trees and three-fourth die due to neglect, therefore the locals are given responsibility to look after the planted areas under constant supervision.

Employment to the local people with low income

By giving the responsibility to look after the plantation area to the local people in turn has created employment opportunities for the committed local community which has helped in institutional development of the community, in gender equality and overall in bringing the community together.

To save wild life species

Forest being natural habitat of the wildlife, shelters varieties of indigenous flora and fauna protecting the biological diversity of its area. So the survival of the wildlife is synonymous with the existence of the forest. To cite and example, if Nepal were to lose its remaining humid tropical forest, the loss would be 10 species of highly valuable timber, 6 spe3cies of edible fruit trees, 4 species of traditional medicinal herbs, some 50 species of little known trees and shrubs not to mention how severely it would affect hundreds of species of animals and birds.

Develop the plantation site as a breeding place of different endangered species.
